Wilfrid Wood

Sculptor

- LONDON -

Imagine London in the early 90s. The digital age is creeping up on us and the world is aching for people who want to work in the digital creative sector..Wilfrid could have ended up as one of them with his graphic design career, but - luckily, instead did a detour and found a way to this artist studio on a side street off Hackney Wick creating satyrical plasticine sculptures.

The experience of meeting Wilfred for the first time struck me with ease and a sense of wild curiosity. Ive been keeping an eye on his work for a long time and from the moment the door opened into his studio and countless plasticine eyes stared at me, I felt my admiration of his work all made sense.

Wilfrid is dressed in the same colour as his many post-it notes and the plasticine people in the room have all chosen to dress in my favourite hues. I feel at home!
The saga of Wilfrid seems to have floated so very naturally through a whole lot of adventures, jobs and people. After working with Spitting Image creating puppet heads for a while, he started making personal work to cope with boredom.
Comparing his first ever commission, for The Face Magazine, you can tell its a much more organic and analog feel to his current work.

The reason for me visiting his studio was simply to take a photograph or two, but if this was an interview and I had the opportunity to write down one of the many things we chatted about in the form of a quote it would have sounded something like :

“I dont want to get too obsessed with having a style. I create what I want to create and constantly get surprised by how much trends effect my work.”

On that note, lets all embrace the trend of workshopping! Wilfrid is overly excited (Yes, thats another quote) to forget about dry January and get us together for a 2-hour sculpting workshop followed by an hour of socialising at the Benk + Bo bar!
