Creative Head Chef and Kitchen Manager

About The Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic, organised and creative chef to take on running our kitchen and catering offering here at Benk + Bo.

This is an incredibly diverse role encompassing many different areas of the business in what is a really exciting time for us. We are looking for a real all-rounder for this role - someone who is hungry to make it their own and become part of the future of the business.

The focus of the role will be mainly split between our cafe on Gravel Lane and our catering services:

The Cafe - We serve a daily selection of vegetarian and vegan salads, deli items and hot food, freshly made using high quality, thoughtfully sourced ingredients in our kitchen on Gravel Lane. The Head Chef will be responsible for developing our made to order menu offering and changing this seasonally. Additionally, developing our deli counter offering and putting production specifications and systems in place for the kitchen team to follow. As well as running the day to day of our cafe kitchen, you will manage the kitchen team, plan weekly deli menus, manage kitchen ordering and generally develop our food offering, while controlling costs.

Benk + Bo Catering - Our catering offering currently ranges from catering events in our own event space on Gravel Lane to delivery for photoshoots and off site events. This is an area of the business that we are really keen to expand over the next year and so our ideal candidate would be confident to contribute to the strategy and plan for achieving our business objectives. For the right candidate there would be the potential to establish a separate catering arm of the business with equity options.

About Benk + Bo

Benk + Bo is a project brought about by a love of community and hosting. Within our 3 floor Brutalist building in Spitalfields we have a cafe serving specialist coffee and fresh vegetarian food, a yoga studio, shared workspaces and members areas, a meeting room, piano practice room and facilities for events and photo shoots.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Someone who is bursting with both creative and strategic ideas; has impeccable organisation skills, is confident to work both autonomously and collaboratively, and thrives when managing a team. 

  • Financially literate - able to cost out new dishes, cost and plan event catering, manage staffing costs and GP%.

  • A strategic and methodical thinker - always looking to improve systems and ways the business runs.

  • Previous experience working within a kitchen environment is essential, experience working within a new and independent food business would be advantageous. 

  • Experience of managing staff, hiring, rotating and controlling labour costs.

  • A proactive problem solver with a positive attitude - As a multifaceted small business it is important that our Head Chef is able to think on their feet and remain positive and proactive in the face of any unexpected events!

  • Ideally a level 3 food hygiene qualification. A strong understanding of food hygiene practices and procedures is essential.

Regular shifts start at 7.30am and end at 4pm, Monday - Friday with flexibility required for evening and weekend catering jobs as and when they happen. 

£25,000 per annum - 40 hours per week.
