Salty Studio x Isabella Mitchell: Map Making Workshop

Salty Studio and Isabella Mitchell are collaborating to create... a map making workshop at Benk + Bo!

Mapmaking Workshop with Isabella Mitchell:

A mapmaking workshop which places focus on sensory storytelling and revels in the traces of fleeting yet fond holiday memories. To begin the workshop, you will be briefly introduced to the history of map design, with examples of characteristic features and artistic interpretations to inspire your own creation.

Through a series of hands-on, creative exercises, you will be encouraged to recall journeys and visualise destinations. You will learn how to translate your memories into a visual language, through cutting, collaging, mark-making, with the additional option of drawing if you wish.

You will leave the workshop with your own map, and a unique process which you can use to visually describe geographical locations, as shaped by your own personal experiences.

All materials are provided for this workshop, which is suitable for all abilities. Children over the age of 14 are welcome if accompanied by a parent. Books and visual references will be provided. Feel free to bring your own inspiring visuals such as photos or sketchbooks if desired.

Food (of course):

During the workshop, Maud from Salty Studio will present 5 different snacks inspired by remote islands around the world and tell a short story about where these come from and their history.

The following islands have been picked to inspire each snack! Here are a couple of ingredients you can expect to see...

+ Faroe Islands, Denmark: turnips, volcanic charcoal powder, fish & seaweed

+ Edinburgh of the seven seas, Tristan da Cuhna: potatoes multiple ways

+ Comoros Island: vanilla, plantains, seafood, coconut milk

+ Kerguelen Islands, French Southern & Antarctic Lands: crêpes, salted caramel sauce

+ Nunavut islands, Canada: all about berries

Salty Studio is founded by Maud de Rohan Willner, a French/British creative food & experience designer in London. Focusing on the senses, she aims to tell stories and create interactive experiences for her guests to remember. Combining food and design she wants to explore innovative ways to convey messages and transmit emotions, through textures, colours, flavours, aromas and more.

Isabella Mitchell is a freelance designer and illustrator based in London. Her practice centres around drawing places, people and objects from observation. She simplifies forms down to shape, colour and line, and explores relationships through composition, to create playful prints and digital illustrations. She designs and runs workshops to promote the mindful benefits of drawing and designing, within an environment which is easy to access, engage with and connect.

Joseph Futack / LISTEN HERE

Joseph Futak is 20 year old London based musician and artist mixing raw indie folk with ambient electronics and slowcore-inspired band arrangements – exploring an intricate relationship between experimental compositions and contemporary songs. After playing for several years in London bands, Joseph is now developing his solo project with the help of friends George Davies, Lucy Rushton and Lily Clifford, and is already building a reputation for striking and moving live performances.

HD Hausman / LISTEN HERE

HD Hausmann is the new project from Grass House’s vocalist and songwriter Liam Palmer, alongside bass guitarist Alex Oates. The duo’s music has been described “a lovely minimalist hymn” (Uncut), and more recently - in relation to the last single Recognise Faces (May 2019) - as a “tranquil wash of colours” (Songwriting Magazine).

Ailsa / LISTEN HERE

Intricate melodies that weave over brooding basslines, Ailsa Tully is creating an ethereal world that is rooted in folk with darker undertones. Inspired by choral music, folk and indie her sound is haunting, tender and powerful. Her lyrics are both honest and poetic, often exploring feminism and her experiences of being female in her writing. Ailsa has an all-female band which bring her song writing to life, from modal harmonies and driving rhythms to tender emotive melody lines. Ailsa has been featured on BBC radio Wales many times, toured Italy, performed at festivals and venues throughout the country, including Greenman and Ronnie Scotts. ‘I can’t tell you how excited I got when I heard this… inexplicable transcendental excellence’ – Adam Walton (BBC Introducing Wales)
