Hypermobility & Yoga: Be Kind To Your Body

Not sure how hypermobility effects your practice, or your students' practice? In our yoga practice, we're almost constantly told to "microbend" our elbows, to stop "locking out" our knees. But what does this actually mean, and where does the root cause lie?

Leave with a better understanding of hypermobility: it's causes, consequences, and strategies for working with hypermobility, rather than against it.

Join senior teacher, Harriet McAtee, for a workshop dedicated to unpacking hypermobility, including:

  • Anatomy & Physiology of Hypermobility

  • Common Myths & Misconceptions

  • Rethinking Hypermobility: Managing Frustration & Expectation

  • Being Kind to Your Body: Techniques for Hypermobility in Yoga Practice

About Harriet

Harriet is a passionate, irreverent and adaptive yoga teacher. She is the CEO of Yoga Quota, a charity that spreads the benefits of yoga to vulnerable people nationwide, and also lead trainer on Yoga Quota's 200 hour and Pregnancy Yoga teacher training programs.

The Life in Still Life
Sep

6:30 PM18:30

The Life in Still Life

The Life in Still Life drawing workshops is a series a little different to the usual 'life drawing' set up - they are a mix between still life and life drawing. Attendees are presented with a still life composition of plants, fruits, ornaments and beautiful fabric textures, but the key difference is the presence of a model, posed with the elements of still life and therefore, a part of it.

Expect soulful music, refreshments, charming ornaments, a variety of plants/textures, and diverse life drawing models (either clothed or nude), to create a chilled environment where everything you draw is beautiful.

The Life in Still Life drawing sessions aims to:
- Encourage people to create drawings that collate the exploratory nature of still life with the humanistic focus of life drawing, allowing for a space to draw your own masterpieces 'providing invaluable insight into how we live and what we value most’
- Provide a calming space for people to gather and get creative, without any pressure or expectations
- Encourage the use of art as self-care, mostly by celebrating the chance to reflect and create something you can be proud of (no matter what your skill level is)

Ōkēlē is an innovative dining concept by British Nigerian chef, cookbook author of 'Hibiscus' and The Observer Rising Star of Food 2017, Lopè Ariyo.

On top of popular foods reimagined, Ōkēlē aims to shine a new light on everyday dishes in West Africa, especially Nigerian cuisine. Òkèlè is a Yoruba word used to describe dishes made from tubers such as yam or cassava which are boiled, pounded down and then steamed with water. The West African answer to pasta if you will. To those unfamiliar with òkèlè dishes, it could also be described as a cross between a dumpling and polenta.

Guests will be treated to a delectable three-course dinner and a fruitful selection of homemade soft drinks. There are additional tickets for guest who would prefer to enjoy their meal with wine or cocktails.

Yogis For Wildlife Fundraiser

At the heart of every conservationist and every yogi is one common denominator; compassion. We care deeply for this planet and the lives of the creatures that we share our space with. This workshop is an opportunity for conservationists to explore the world of yoga, and for yogis to learn more about the struggles our planet faces each day at the hand of humanity. It’s an opportunity for us all to stand together and make a difference.

Margot Raggett, founder of Remembering Wildlife, will lead a talk on issues that elephants and rhino’s face in the wild and the great work they are doing in the fight against poaching. I will lead a one hour vinyasa yoga class, which is accessible to all levels. Afterwards there will be an informal Q&A and an opportunity to purchase the Remembering Rhinos and Remembering Elephants books – the first of The Remembering Wildlife series.

All proceeds go to Remembering Wildlife and the projects they support through the Born Free Foundation.

MINDFULNESS FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVING
Jul

7:00 PM19:00

MINDFULNESS FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVING

Come spend an evening exploring the connection between mindfulness and sustainable living!

The practice of mindfulness goes far beyond practicing being in the present moment. Mindfulness is rooted in awareness: awareness of the self, awareness of the world, and awareness of how we exist in the world and impact it. But it goes one step further, for by being aware of our impact in the world we can also begin to take responsibility for it and behave with caution when we suspect our impact to be negative. In this way, the practice of mindfulness equips us with the mindset that helps in the creation of more sustainable lifestyles - and future.

The night will go as follows:

  • You will attend a panel discussion and Q&A on the importance of a mindful attitude in sustainable living with Ana Carneiro, Hanna Pumfrey and Nat Mady - founders of Be For ChangeAcala and Hackney Herbal

  • You will then learn about Restorative herbs in a 40min workshop led by Nat

  • Time to snack on sustainable munchies and refreshements, and the opportunity to further connect with the speakers and other attendants!

Please note that this event will not result in any profit for either organisers, price of tickets covers venue hire and refreshments and other associated costs.

Doors will open at 6.45pm and the event will begin promptly at 7pm.

Mens Indian Yoga Flow with Ravi

Mens Indian Yoga Workshop

Men have practiced yoga for thousands of years. Yet in the decades after yoga became more popular in the West, it initially had its wings clipped, side-lining much of its spiritual depth and physical potential; adopted by lycra-clad ladies on sunny Californian beaches. As a result it was ignored or dismissed by the vast majority of men and stereotyped as a rather passive, moderate and unchallenging exercise.

Today, the Western reinterpretation of yoga is finally being thoroughly investigated, exploited and confidently enjoyed. By both women and men alike. However, there remains a preconception that flexibility is compulsory - and that's where men often feel left behind.

During this 2-hour workshop specifically designed for men, Ravi will take you through a traditional Indian Yoga practice with a focus on postures and sequences best suited to men's bodies. The workshop will also include Pranayama breathing techniques for cleansing and energising the body and mind. The practice will be suitable for all experience levels, from complete beginners and advanced.

Tickets: £20

Yoga has changed our lives, and our friends and families' lives, for the better. Fact is we want more men to do yoga and get the same rewards. Hopefully so we flow... and Ravi will help make yoga more accessible and effortless for all men - beginners and experts, introverts and extroverts, fanatics and casuals.

About Ravi

Ravi was born in India and from a young age he grew up with a yoga practice as part of his daily life. In his early twenties he lived at the Mahatma Yoga Ashram in Rishikesh where he studied traditional Hatha and Ashtanga Yoga with well-respected Yoga master Yogi Ji. Ravi has been teaching all across India since 2010; most recently he was the resident teacher at Little Cove Yoga, voted as one of the best yoga schools in Goa, where he led classes for thousands of students from all over the world. Create your own Terrariums

Get your hands dirty and learn how to make a closed terrarium to decorate your home or office! A Terrarium is an indoor garden and is the perfect way to bring the outside indoors.

Good To Know

Terrariums are self-contained ecosystems. Heat and light pass through the glass walls and the plants photosynthesise. Condensation forms on the glass and drips down into the soil watering the plants.

Over 2 hours, you will learn how to assemble your terrarium, selecting from a range of plants and pebbles to make your terrarium totally unique. Note that cacti or succulents are not used in closed terrariums like this as they thrive in more open containers.

You will also leave the class with a handy care guide to help you preserve your terrarium for months and years to come!
